New Port Richey

New Port Richey, Florida, in Pasco county, is 11 miles N of Palm Harbor, Florida (center to center) and 26 miles NW of Tampa, Florida. The city is in the Tampa-Saint Petersburg-Clearwater area.   The city was originally known as Hickory Hammock. It was later renamed after its original settler Captain Aaron Richey, who established it during the 1880s. The city was incorporated in October, 1924 and its first mayor was Dr. Elroy M. Avery, who had formerly been the State Senator for Ohio. Initially this area attracted a number of silent screen stars due to the efforts of Thomas Meighan and Gloria Swanson. They owned the luxurious Hacienda Hotel that was completed in 1927.
